Langer Wins 2009 Red Cedar Match Games

Menomonie- In a final match that featured two of the top amateur bowlers in the Midwest, Brooklyn Park’s Dave Langer outdueled Todd Savoy 202-189 to win the 2009 Miller Lite Red Cedar Match Games at Broadway Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
For the man affectionately known as “Lumpy”, it was redemption for his match play performance at the 2008 RCMG. Langer’s trademark release enabled him to overcome the burnt up lane condition and defeat the future USBC hall of famer. Savoy, who hails from Superior and fresh off a tournament last weekend that featured match wins in the finals over both of his sons, played the RCMG bridesmaid role for the second year in a row.
In the double elimination format, Savoy would need two match wins against Langer, who hadn’t yet lost a match. Savoy appeared to control the first match, but an open in the sixth frame gave new life to Langer, and was able to put together strikes late in the game. Langer only needed to convert a single pin spare in the tenth to secure the match and claim the 2009 title.
50 of the areas top bowlers rolled an eight game qualifying set, with the top 12 advancing to match play. Chad Nelson of Owattona, MN was top qualifier with a total pinfall of 1735, including a perfect score of 300 his second game of the day. Sayoy was second qualifier with a total of 1733, and a high game of 279. On an oil pattern that became increasing difficult as qualifying progressed, the final transfer spot was less than a 200 average.
